No Medals For Slovenia at First Rowing World Cup Meet
30 May 2010

The last day of racing at the World Cup meet in Bled started early today with A finals on from 8.50 in the morning. A full spectator stand saw many interesting races, Slovenia finished with one sixth and one ninth place. The double sculls with Iztok Cop and Olaf Tufte finished fourth for Norway.

Cop and Tufte, the pair rowed for Norway, had a slow start, rowing fifth through the first 1000 meters. Both rowers known as good finishers put pressure on the rest of the field, having a strong final 500 meters. But the course was a few meters short, in the end they had to settle with fourth place, missing the podium just by 30 hundreds of a second. The first British crew Matthew Wells and Marcus Bateman won the race with 6.26.66.

The quad with brothers Luka and Jan Spik, Gasper Fistravec and Andraz Krek had a very quick start, being fastest at the first 500 meters mark but than started to lose speed. The Slovenian crew fell behind and did not manage to close the gap until the end, finishing last in the final A. A mishap in the final meters, Krek hit a buoy and lost his right oar, slowed the boat for a few seconds.

The mens lightweight double sculls with Matevz Malesic and Jan Cvet rowed the final B for a place between 7 and 12. The crew finished third in the group, which won them a final 9th place.

Next World Cup meet is planned in Munich, the Olympic course from 1972 will host the regatta from 18th to 20th June.
