World Cup Regatta Just a Test for Slovenian Rowers
25 May 2010

All three Slovenian crews that will take part in the upcoming World Cup at Lake Bled this weekend - the coxless four, quadruple scull and the lightweight double scul - revealed its goals for the competition. The national headcoach Milos Jansa said that no additional preparation training was made prior to the event, the regatta will serve as a test of current boat speed and new-formed crew performance.

The quadruple scull (Andraz Krek, Luka Spik, Jan Spik, Gasper Fistravec) and the coxless four (Miha, Tomaz and Ziga Pirih, Rok Kolander) took part at the international regatta in Duisburg two weeks ago, where the crews reached first place (coxless four) and third place (quad), but there was no real test for the mentioned teams so far. The races ahead will therefore be a first bigger test for both boats, the goal according to coach Jansa is to reach final A.

The lightweight rowers in the double scull Matevz Malesic and Jure Cvet are not new to the international rowing competition, they were second in the last year's World Championships U-23 and third at the Mediterranean Games, but will start in the World Cup for the first time. They will race 23 other crews and will first try to reach the semi-finals and hope for their best performance this year.

Also among visitors in Bled was the Slovenia's president Mr. Danilo Tuerk (honorary president of the Bled World Cup 2010 and the 2011 Rowing Championships), who first visited the finish tower in Velika Zaka and then greeted all ten members of the Slovenian team in Mala Zaka. The rowers did not only describe what they do but they showed personally how a boat is rowed properly. Slovenia's president said that he already got familiar with rowing in the United States, where he visited several Universities during his long-term work as the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs. He also expressed best wishes to the rowers prior to the upcoming competition starting Friday.

Mr. President later also met the members of the organising committees, who organised World Championships in Bled in the years 1966, 1979 and 1989.
